My March 2014 Birchbox

So I'm a little late in writing this one this month for two reasons one) I've started a new job with more hours that has knocked my previous blogging schedule out of the water and two) Birchbox forgot to send me the little magazine/booklet in my box and I was waiting for them to post it out to me so I could read it in case it added anything to the review - however they said over a week ago they were posting it out and there's still no sign of it so...

Where was I? Right, so I'm a little later in getting this post out this month and what that means is that I've heard other peoples' thoughts and reviews, enough to know that I'm going against the grain in saying that I was disappointed with this month's box- for a number of reasons.

So, firstly, like I mentioned they forgot to include the magazine/cards, but to be fair, they emailed me before my box even arrived saying they'd realised the error and they'd post the cards out to me - well, I've never received them. Slightly annoying.

But letting that go, let's actually look at the box. Now this month they collaborated with Lulu Guinness - which I'll admit is a brand I'm not very familiar with, but regardless of that it seemed like kind of a gimmick to me. I would have expected the actual box to have been customised - in a black and white stripe, but instead they sent out a little card cover for it which was a bit wasteful and utterly pointless. There also was a voucher for £20 off a £100 spend at Lulu Guinness, which I suppose, if you're into that sort of thing, is pretty good.

Inside the box there's the usual card telling me what I got inside and how much it all is full price, and also a little card promoting Benefit's Give Me Brow, that says to take it for free 'makeupper' at a Benefit Bar, which I suppose is nice.

Products wise, I'm not happy with the overall selection either, but there are two gems in there - the Molton Brown Rhubarb and Rose hand cream being one. I love Molton Brown, but their shower/bath products can be a little rough on my sensitive skin, so I was excited to try out a hand cream, hoping it would be more useable for me; it's nice that I have a little sample to try now without having to splurge on a full tube - just in case.  The other product I'm happy to see is Benefit's Stay Don't Stray Eyeshadow Primer. I don't have a wealth of experience with eyeshadow primers to be honest; I know Urban Decay's is awesome, but beyond that I haven't dabbled much as I don't use a primer often (I know... I should...) - so I'm happy to have the opportunity to try this one out as Benefit have some good products. Also in my box I received some Aroma Works Nurture Body Oil. It's a very small sample of 5ml, so I'm not sure how useful that actually is in testing out a body product, but maybe it'll go a lot further than I'm expecting it to.

Unfortunately that's where the happiness ends for me; there were three other 'products' in the box - a stick of rock that's black and white striped and has "Lulu hearts Birchbox" written through it. Personally I wouldn't sit and eat a stick of rock and while I appreciate it's super cute, something 1/10th of the size would have been just as cute and novel. There was also a perfume sample from English Laundry which as I've said before, I dislike getting in beauty boxes because perfume samples can be so easily obtained for free. And lastly I received a tube of Dr. Brandt's Pores No More pore refiner, which, truthfully sounds like a good product, however written on the back very clearly it says for "oily combination skin" - which is really the opposite of my skin type, and, thanks to filling in the beauty survey on their site, Birchbox know this. Why do a survey if you're going to ignore the results and send out any old product? Not happy about this at all! My skin is far from perfect but it doesn't need something to soak up excess oil and mattify my skin... not cool Birchbox.

Anyway, like I said, I'm not thrilled with this box; it seems really poorly flung together as is evident by there being parts missing and a product that is utterly useless for me. It's disappointing as I normally really look forward to my Birchbox arriving, but this month I could barely muster a "meh". I know that the whole point of these boxes is to try new things - things you might not have seen or heard of, and that with that comes the issue that probably won't love all the products... and honestly, I'm down with that. But a 5ml body oil sample? A product that is completely useless for my skin type? Some cheap hard candy and a valueless perfume sample? Really... what brands am I supposed to be discovering? Both the oil and the pore refiner might be amazing but I'll never know because the oil is too small a quantity to judge and the pore refiner is never going to be for me, even if it's the best pore refiner in the world!

From other reviews I've read I think I'm in the minority with my feelings, but I would love to hear from you and what you thought of your Birchbox! Thanks for reading, Kitty
