Getting too Caught up in 'Seasonality'?

The world of beauty blogging is highly seasonal isn't it? And I mean, I get that - brands release new products for new seasons and the bloggers review those so naturally we see Summer products and then as the season changes we see all the Winter stuff, and I also know from firsthand experience that sometimes on cold, wet, rainy days in Scotland wearing a neon polish or a bold coral lip can be the only thing that reminds me it is in fact Summer. I don't dislike seasonal changes, variety is the spice of life as they say, but I wonder sometimes if I don't get too caught up in it.

It's the end of July now, so for months it's been pale pinks, self tanners and festival outfits as far as the eye can see. Then, when reading the Sunday Times a couple of weeks ago, I came across the above article entitled "Summer Vamping" - and, worryingly, my first thought was; "wait, we're allowed to do that?!" as if there's some great judgmental lipstick-entity raining down punishment on all those who dare to wear anything with 'plum' in the title.

Don't get me wrong, I fail at seasonalability (let's pretend that's a word shall we?) all the time. I wear a freaking coat in Summer because I'm always cold, I'm still slathering lip balms and body butters onto my dry skin and yes, sometimes, I wear a berry lip. But it's always accompanied with a feeling of almost guilt, like I'm 'doing it wrong'. Like I'm out of fashion, or not 'with it' and frankly, I disappoint myself in feeling that because that's the opposite of what makeup should be about to me.

I've always been interested in makeup and clothes as a way of self-expression; of showing a bit of character and making a bit of a statement about yourself. Where has that attitude gone? I think a lot of it has to do with writing a blog now, I feel like I should be reviewing the new Summer releases, or I should be doing a more Summery FOTD post - and to be clear, I'm not saying this has anything to do with other bloggers, who are, quite possibly entirely happy in seasonally changing their makeup, I'm just realising in myself that this isn't the way I want it to be.

I'm not saying I won't use Summer colours in Summer, or maybe try some of the new launches but I guess, I want to do it because I want to do it and not because I've put some kind of pressure on myself to fit in and keep up. It's good to have a seasonal reminder to try something new and out your comfort zone - says me nervously eyeing the bottle of gradual tanner perched on my desk - but I think it's important to not dive in so deep every season that you lose yourself a little bit.

What do you think?
