Maybelline Brow Drama Sculpting Mascara

Up until recently I was really disinterested in my brows. I have been blessed (or cursed depending on what the fashion is..) with pretty bold brows and yes, my mother did always tell me not to pluck them to oblivion and yes, I did take her advice (well, actually I am just unbelievably lazy and could never be bothered doing it, but whatever... the end result is the same). For ages all I used on my brows was the Maybelline Sculpting Brow Drama Pencil (in Soft Brown) and maybe, maybe, I would set them with some clear mascara.

In some ways, the pencil worked fine for me; it is a little red toned, but so are my brows, it would maybe look a little waxy, but I really used so little of it you couldn't notice. No, the issue I had really was that when I was in a rush I would just use the pencil and they'd look good.... until I stepped outside and they'd get blown about and I'd end up looking like one of those old men who present archeological programs on the BBC. But then using mascara as well?! Ain't nobody got time for that!

When I stopped and thought about what I wanted for my brows on an everyday basis I realised that I don't really have bald patches or noticeable inequality between my brows, I don't need to fill them in as such for a day at work or whatever, I just need something to add a little definition and pull them together a bit... and keep them that way.

So when I saw the Maybelline Brow Drama Sculpting Mascara in Boots one day, I felt like my prayers had been answered. I had known there were other similar products out there, I know Benefit does one, but it was more than I was willing to spend on something I wasn't quite sure of. This is £4.99 so not a big deal if I didn't like it so much. I actually picked up the shade Deep Blonde as I wasn't sure if I would be that or the darker one, but I'd rather use one that's too light, than end up with caterpillars.Colour wise I think it's pretty good - it's not red toned or too ashy and it does pretty much match my brows. Maybe a little light, but I suspect I'm in between shades.

There's not a lot to say about the application; it's just mascara for your brows - which blew Kenny's mind entirely, but probably isn't revolutionary for any of us. The wand is a little odd; it has a ball at the front and a much narrower, erm... back? Anyway, you can see from the photo. At first, I did end up with mascara in the surrounding areas, but very quickly it became easy to use and very fast too - I guess it's just a case of becoming familiar with the shape of your brows.

One thing that is weird about it, and I know this because I'm very sarcastic and arch my eyebrows a lot - is that it feels really weird for a little while after you've applied it. Very crispy and tight. Fortunately it doesn't look it and things do 'loosen up' after a little while.

Not an easy thing to swatch and maybe a bit pointless, but it's a hard thing guessing the shade of your brows, so I thought it was worth putting the photo in, You can see it is a bit red toned, which suits me. I tried to get this photo to show the colour as correctly as possible, but it does maybe look a little darker here.

I find that this really does stay put all day; not only does it hold my brows in the desired position, but it also doesn't crumble and leave unsightly flakes all over my face either. So I suppose, for me, the bottom line is it doesn't do a whole lot for my brows, but what it does, it does quickly, well and with a lot of durability so for me, it's definitely a win!

  1. I also have this and although I think it's a great shade and formula for me, especially on those days when I don't have time to fill in my brows with anything else. I just think that the brush is too chunky for eyebrows x

    1. Some days, I get on really well with it, and other days I end up with smudges on my brow bone which is annoying - I think the idea of the 'ball' on the end is good, but maybe it's a little too big?
