Essence BIG Lashes Volume Boost Mascara

Essence Get Big Lashes Volume Boost Mascara Review

When we moved to Glasgow a few weeks ago, I just brought up a suitcase to begin with; I knew we'd have a lot of furniture moving and cleaning to do, which would only be made more difficult if I had seven boxes of shoes and my own body weight of fluffy socks in the room, and, also, we had an issue of how best to move all our stuff at once, and since Kenny's van was already loaded with his junk lovely belongings, we just took his stuff first. Anyway, the downside of this was that I only packed a makeup bag and in it I had two mascaras; the Maybelline Rocket Volum' Express Waterproof Mascara - which is a great waterproof mascara, but I don't like wearing waterproof when I don't need to, and the second one was the Physicians Formula Organic Wear Jumbo Lash Mascara - which I reviewed, here, and remarked it transferred quite a bit on me, and, what with all the moving of furniture and catching of the tube (why is it so weirdly moist and humid down there!?) I found the transfer situation got a lot worse. I needed a new mascara, but, with a box of them waiting for me at my mum's I grudged paying much for anything to use temporarily, so, when I happened across a pop up Essence store and saw mascaras in the £2 price range, I picked one up with the thought of "it will do". I chose, slightly randomly, the BIG Lashes Volume Boost Mascara (£2.30). There were a whole bunch, but no wands out to see or anything, and, since I figured it wouldn't be up to much for the price anyway, I just grabbed this one.

How pleasantly surprised I have been - this mascara is a perfectly wearable and functional mascara. A show-stopper it ain't but for everyday, running errands or hanging out at home, this totally gets the job done. It's a fibre, kind of rounded brush that I don't find prone to overloading or underloading with product. In terms of applying the formula, it's not too wet or too dry; it's really pleasant to work with, and you can layer this up if you wish. What does it do for my lashes? Well, not the most to be perfectly honest. It does add some volume and some definition and the formula is pleasantly black, but, like I said, for me this isn't 'high impact, night out' lashes. The good news is what it does do to my lashes, it holds throughout the day - no flaking or lashes just kind of falling down in exhaustion, and, no transferring, even from my bottom lashes.

Left, no mascara and right, with mascara

After I work my way through my little stash of mascaras, I really can't see me forking out for an 'everyday' mascara from the likes of Maybelline or L'Oreal again - I mean, sure, they're drugstore prices, but you're talking about £8-£10, versus £2-£3 from Essence, and for me, it's not worth the difference, not for just something to wear daily. Essence actually has a whole bunch of mascaras and, while I am happy with this one, I'd be intrigued to know if people love any of the others? Or if there's one I should try out next? Or if you've tried any, what did you think?
